Hillsborough County may soon experience an increase in affordable housing, driven by advancements in 3D printing technology. The Corporation to Develop Communities (CDC) of Tampa, has recently showcased how they plan to utilize a 3D printer for constructing houses in a cost-effective manner.

The printer, which became a reality through a $500,000 investment from Hillsborough County, is set to revolutionize the construction of residential properties by building exterior and even interior walls. For now, concrete exteriors are the focus, but the scope could expand, said James Light, owner of Precision Building and Renovating, in an interview obtained by the Hillsborough County. This technological leap aims to reduce both the price of homes and the time it takes to construct them.

According to Light, "precision concrete pump" is another name for the 3D printer, which aligns with a digital blueprint to construct homes. Automated processes inherent in this technique are expected to minimize errors and slash construction costs, posing a significant benefit in the housing market, according to the announcement from the Hillsborough County.

Sarah Lower, the principal architect with LLG Architecture, is optimistic about the new technology. "3D printers represent a big change for the home-building industry," she told the Hillsborough County. These houses offer more than financial benefits for potential homeowners; they are designed with climate and terrain-specific customizations. These features include enhanced heating and cooling efficiency, safety measures such as fireproofing, and the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Since 1992, the CDC of Tampa has worked to provide people with pathways towards economic success and invigorated neighborhoods. They connect various aspects of community welfare—from workforce development to housing—all in hopes of fostering prosperous futures. The affordable housing services financed by Hillsborough County can be researched further on their website, with additional information available at HCFL.gov/AffordableHousing.
