An ongoing investigation is underway following the death of a woman at the Allegheny County Jail on Saturday morning after what officials have called a "medical incident." According to WPXI, Acting Warden Shane Dady confirmed that a 53-year-old woman experienced the incident Saturday morning at the facility's intake department. She had been incarcerated the previous day on a felony possession charge.
Dady expressed condolences, saying, "We offer our condolences to the deceased and their family," noting that significant efforts have been invested in improving processes to identify and provide care for vulnerable individuals within the jail, according to a statement reported by CBS News. A medical emergency was declared at around 7:30 a.m. Despite attempts at lifesaving measures by both jail and healthcare staff until paramedics' arrival, the woman was pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m.
The woman's identity has not been released pending notification of her emergency contacts. The Allegheny County Police Department is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, while an internal review is also set to be conducted within the jail facilities.
