Bank jugging, a term unfamiliar to many, has hit close to home with a recent incident in Irvine. Last week, after withdrawing money from a local bank, a victim's day took a turn when his vehicle was burglarized while shopping at Walmart. According to the Irvine Police Department's Facebook post, the theft was reported by a vigilant witness who provided updates that led to a swift arrest.
The suspects, identified as Christopher Mark Williams, 26, Camran Newtt Lorenzo, 23, Jailyn Lamuir Blackmon, 18, and Arthur Ephraim Brown, 25 were apprehended in Fountain Valley after officers stopped their vehicle, as detailed by the Irvine Police Department. Charged with burglary and conspiracy, the suspects hail from Torrance, Inglewood, and Los Angeles, respectively. The multi-agency effort also thanked the Fountain Valley Police Department, and Orange County Sheriff's Department, for their contributions to what became a successful sting operation.
This method of theft involves thieves scoping out banks for clients walking out with cash. These criminals then tail their marks to subsequent destinations, like shopping centers or personal residences, lie in wait, and commit the act of breaking into the parked vehicle to steal the money left inside.
In light of this occurrence, the police department has issued a warning to the public: stay alert and protect your assets. "If you withdraw cash, be aware of your surroundings and never leave it unattended in your car," the Irvine Police Department advise.
