A nearly 3-year-old toddler was pronounced dead after being discovered in a pond on Jacksonville's Southside, authorities confirmed earlier today. The distressing event unfolded when the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) responded to a report of a missing child last night at Bennett Creek Apartments, according to News4Jax. Sergeant Reed of JSO indicated that officers arrived at approximately 8:36 p.m. and immediately began searching for the child.
During the search, officers located the child submerged in a nearby pond. The officers "swam out to retrieve the child and immediately began life-saving measures" until Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel took over, as reported by First Coast News. Despite these rescue attempts, the child was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
Local outlets have covered the heartbreaking story of officers diving into the water and performing CPR, highlighting their quick response and the seriousness of the situation. Despite their extensive efforts to save the child, as noted by Action News Jax, the attempts were ultimately unsuccessful. Officers entered the water, brought the child to shore, and gave CPR until Jacksonville Fire and Rescue arrived to transport the toddler to a local hospital.
The local community is grieving as the investigation continues into the child's death. Child safety is a major concern among residents. This tragic event, involving a toddler not yet three years old, has left both the sheriff's office and the community seeking answers and closure.
