The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is set to stripe the Kahului Park & Ride lot this week. According to an announcement on the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation website, the work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Thursday, September 5, and Friday, September 6. The lot located along Kūʻihēlani Highway will have its northern section tackled first, followed by the southern section the next day.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation advises vehicle owners to move their cars from the relevant portions of the lot before the scheduled work times, with striping beginning on the north side nearest to Puʻunene Avenue on Thursday, and on the south side on Friday. Despite the scheduled maintenance, Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has ensured that, at least two electric vehicle chargers will remain accessible out of the four available during the striping process.

The charges in question are part of Hawaii's commitment to sustainable transportation. They are four 150-kilowatt, direct current fast chargers equipped with both Combined Charging System and CHArge de MOve ports. This development marks Hawaiʻi’s first National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure charging station, a notable step in modernizing the state's transit facilities.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is not stopping there, with work progressing on another National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure station on Oʻahu. This initiative highlights the state's broader plan to support electric vehicle use, encouraging residents, and visitors to adopt cleaner transportation options. It's a forward-looking strategy aiming to not only alleviate traditional fuel dependency, but also to contribute to the global effort of reducing carbon emissions, through infrastructure improvements such as these.
