An early morning burst of violence shattered the calm in Kalamazoo on Saturday, as gunfire rang out striking a white GMC SUV and leaving one person dead, another injured. According to the WOODTV report, the incident occurred around 4:10 a.m. near the intersection of N. Westnedge Avenue and Florence Street, mere miles from Western Michigan University.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting. In a statement shared through their Facebook page, authorities indicated that the driver suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the torso, and a passenger was shot in the leg. Despite their injuries, the victims managed to drive themselves to a local hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead, the injured passenger is currently listed in stable condition, and is undergoing treatment for the wounds deemed non-life-threatening.

The identity of the driver has not been released, and details concerning the shooter remain scarce. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has expressed confidence in the progression of the investigation. "However, KDPS is following several leads and is confident that progress is being made in the investigation," they assured in a press release covered by WWJ Newsradio.
