On a significant day for Kaua‘i County, a blessing ceremony took place to mark the completion of the Lima Ola Supportive Housing Project, an initiative designed to address the housing needs of the island's most vulnerable residents. Mayor Derek Kawakami, reflecting on the collaborative effort that brought the project to life, said, "Mahalo and congratulations to this amazing team, past and present, for crossing another finish line together as new housing continues to be more critical than ever," as reported by the County of Kaua‘i press release.
The ceremony was not just a formality but also a testament to community partnership and perseverance. Dignitaries such as members of the Kaua‘i County Council, state representatives, and cultural practitioner Kahu Sean Chun, who officiated the blessing, were among the 50 attendees. Governor Josh Green commended the project's significance, stating, "Providing housing is not just about creating a place for people to live, it’s about giving our people hope," emphasizing the transformative nature of the supportive housing setup, as per the County of Kaua'i.
The Lima Ola project began in May 2023 and mirrors the County’s existing Kealaula Supportive Housing Project. It aims to offer more than just shelter; the on-site social services are intended to assist tenants in gaining stability and moving toward permanent housing solutions. While these homes are not meant for lifelong occupancy, they also escape the sometimes restrictive timeliness of traditional transitional housing.
Comprising 32 units, which include studio and one-bedroom options, the project also features a community building with essential amenities. A blend of federal and local funding sources, such as the American Rescue Plan Act, the State and Local Recovery Funds, and county funds, paved the way for the $5.86 million endeavor. Housing Director Adam Roversi expressed his anticipation for the impact of the project, "We have seen how the supportive housing model has been a huge success in Līhu‘e and that is encouraging as we complete this project and embark on accepting applications for housing tenants here at Lima Ola," as reported by the County of Kaua'i.
As the county celebrates this milestone, the collaboration between various agencies, construction teams, and community members like Alexander and Baldwin has underscored a shared commitment to tackling the housing crisis facing Kaua‘i. Kaua‘i County Council Vice Chair KipuKai Kuali‘i captured the sentiment of the day: "Through the building of these and other homes, it’s clear, together we’re helping change lives!" By providing a safety net through shelters like Lima Ola, the County of Kaua'i hopes to build a foundation for a brighter, more secure future for its residents in need.
