Kaua‘i’s rigor in nurturing a community shielded from the havoc of flames takes a practical stride on October 5, a day marked for concerted effort and shared resolve. In a collaboration that sees the Kaua‘i Fire Department link arms with the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center, doors are swung open to the public for a Fire Prevention Week kick-off event, set to unfurl a tapestry of educational initiatives from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – a canvas where knowledge converges with action.
The event, as heralded by Kaua‘i Fire Department's Chief Michael Gibson, is not merely an assembly; it is a summons to each household – a call for vigilance that starts within the walls we call our own, "This event is a great opportunity to bring our partners and community together to prevent fires at home as well as dangerous wildfires," said Gibson in a statement on the County of Kaua‘i website, with a vision to usher in the KFD's public education curriculum into the realms where conversations on fire prevention can take firm root.
An ensemble of agencies including, the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency, Kaua‘i Police Department, American Red Cross, and Ocean Safety Bureau, will erect informational booths, standing as sentinels imparting wisdom - all this, free of charge, in addition to fire extinguisher training, hands-on CPR demonstrations and tailored education to ward off personal wildland fire mischief alongside a program dedicated to tumbling prevention amongst the esteemed kūpuna.
The day promises not to be all solemn instruction but a mosaic of merriment for families with fire trucks ready for exploration, photo ops with mascots like Sparky and Smokey the Bear, and a repertoire of games and prizes poised to engrave the day in the minds of young ones especially.
