A 44-year-old Kentwood man's life came to a tragic end yesterday evening after he drowned in Versluis Park in Plainfield Township. The Kent County Sheriff's Office deputies, who were called to the scene after 6 p.m., found that the man had ventured beyond the designated swim area and failed to resurface, as reported by FOX 17 News.
Despite Kent County's dive team being dispatched, it was a Good Samaritan who ultimately recovered the victim from the water. The incident occurred just off of East Beltline, where life-saving measures were taken but sadly proved futile, according to the report by WZZM 13. The identity of the man, a resident of Kentwood, has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The response to the incident was a community effort, as noted by WOODTV, with bystanders, including swimmers and boaters, searching for the man. However, it was divers from Moby's Dive Shop, located nearby, who found the victim. Their rescue attempts were supplemented by Plainfield Fire Chief Kyle Svoboda's team, which performed life-saving procedures for an additional half hour before pronouncing the victim dead. Svoboda, in a statement to the news outlet, suggested the incident was likely a swimming accident.
