A 20-year-old man from Kings Bay, Georgia, tragically lost his life in Columbia County on Saturday morning after losing control of his SUV and crashing into a utility pole, authorities confirmed. The fatal incident occurred around 11:23 a.m. on the entrance ramp to Interstate 10 westbound near Mile Marker 303, as stated by the Florida Highway Patrol. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
According to First Coast News, driving the vehicle, the man's SUV "began to rotate" for reasons yet to be determined, before departing the paved road. Subsequently, the vehicle made its way onto the unpaved shoulder where it collided with the pole with enough force to cause fatal injuries.
The driver was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a crash report indicates. Upon emergency services' swift response, they transported the man to a nearby hospital. It was there, given the seriousness of his injuries, that he was pronounced dead. The unfortunate news of his passing was shared by several outlets, including News4Jax.
Action News Jax reported that the accident happened abruptly as the SUV, which entered onto the entrance ramp, uncontrollably began to rotate. After leaving the paved surface of the road, the vehicle went through the shoulder before crashing into a utility pole, abruptly ending another life. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability that roads can represent.
Local law enforcement is continuing the investigation into the cause of the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol has advised motorists to drive with caution and vigilance, especially during the transitional weather seasons as unpredictable driving conditions can arise.
