In a tragic incident in the Chicago suburbs, the Lake County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating a hit-and-run incident resulting in the death of a horse on Monday night. According to NBC Chicago, the accident occurred at around 9:10 p.m. on the 40800 block of North Delaney Road in Wadsworth.
Upon their arrival at the scene, sheriff's deputies found the injured animal alongside several individuals attempting to provide aid. The horse, which was reportedly walking southbound in the northbound lane, was struck by what is suspected to be a large vehicle, likely a pickup truck. The vehicle involved in the crash failed to stop, the Sheriff's Office added, resulting in the animal suffering major injuries. A veterinarian summoned to the scene evaluated the horse's condition, ultimately, in a devastating yet necessary decision, determining that euthanasia was the only humane option.
Further details about the incident were scarce. There was initial uncertainty over whether the horse had a rider at the time of the accident, or if it had escaped from nearby farmland. In an effort to uncover more information, a drone and K9 team were dispatched for a search, but neither a rider nor any additional clues were discovered. Efforts to locate the horse's owner proved futile as well, despite checks with multiple area ranches and farms. This information was outlined by FOX 32 Chicago, which also covered the incident.
As the investigation into the hit-and-run continues, authorities urge anyone who may have relevant information about the crash or the horse to come forward. Officials seek the public's assistance and encourage potential witnesses to contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office at (847) 377-4000. The community hopes that, with the public's help, the driver responsible for this fatal crash will be identified and brought to justice.
