Las Cruces is set to break ground on its newest public safety infrastructure, Fire Station 9, thanks to a General Obligation Bond approved by voters two years ago. This $9.4 million project will commence on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, and aims to boost the fire and emergency response capabilities for the burgeoning communities that stretch across the city's East Mesa, north of Highway 70. According to the City of Las Cruces, the ceremony, inviting the public's witness, will kick off at 3 p.m. at 3900 Central Ave. off Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.
Chalking up as a much-awaited addition to East Mesa's infrastructure, Fire Station 9 emerges as a response to the rapid residential and business growth in the area. Scheduled speakers at the groundbreaking event will include Mayor Eric Enriquez, Councilor Becky Corran of District 5, and Fire Chief Jason Smith. Embellishing the need for this development, hundreds of homes have been constructed in recent years and the Sonoma Ranch to Rinconada Boulevard business corridor has seen a striking expansion.
With a sweeping 12,000-square-foot layout, the construction of Fire Station 9 is expected to begin shortly after the ceremonial groundbreaking. The project is not only positioned to reinforce the city's fire safety net but also represents a significant investment in the long-term security and resilience of the local community. As reported by the city, the complete operational readiness of Fire Station 9 is projected for the early months of 2026, marking a countdown to enhanced emergency readiness.
