The iconic Tropicana Hotel is set to close with a dramatic implosion, as the buildings that have been part of the Las Vegas skyline since 1957 are scheduled for demolition. Bally's Corporation announced that the site will be transformed into a new Major League Baseball stadium and a modern hotel-casino complex. The demolition event is planned for 2:30 a.m. on October 9 and will feature a carefully choreographed display of 555 drones and a fireworks show by Grucci alongside the implosion, according to KTNV.
In anticipation of this significant Las Vegas transformation, Bally's made it known that the spectacle would be close to the public, foreclosing the option for live audiences. Nevertheless, the event will be accessible to viewers worldwide via various live-streaming channels. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is set to stream the event on X, and additional coverage will be provided on ballylive.com and through the Bally Live app. Local channel 13 will also broadcast the demolition live. Furthermore, FOX5 Vegas adds, that the Paradise Tower will be rigged with 490 pounds of explosives, while the concrete Club Tower will be primed with 1,700 pounds.
The logistics of the Tropicana's implosion showcase the detailed preparations needed for such a large-scale demolition. Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) is handling the process and has a strong track record of safe demolitions in Clark County, having previously taken down buildings like the Dunes North Tower and the Riviera. They plan to use 22,000 feet of detonating cord, linking their past successes to this upcoming event. According to Bally's Corporation, the collaboration between CDI and fireworks specialist Grucci emphasizes the dramatic farewell planned for this once-iconic Las Vegas landmark.
Bally's Corporation has stated that the implosion will see both the Paradise and Club Towers collapse within just 22 seconds once the button is pressed. By hiring CDI, known for its precision in structural demolitions like the Landmark Hotel Tower, the company ensures the event will meet high safety and technical standards. Bally's statement, as obtained by KTNV, captures the essence of the occasion: "From its Rat Pack-era heyday and the glamorous Folies Bergère to now the future home of the Athletics and a cutting-edge entertainment complex by Bally’s Corporation, the Tropicana’s history reflects the spirit of reinvention and excitement that defines Las Vegas."
