In a noteworthy legal development, Adrian Corniel De La Cruz, a 20-year-old from Lawrence, has entered a guilty plea for the 2021 murder of Edward Javier, according to court records. Corniel De La Cruz, who was 17 at the time of the violent crime, admitted to the fatal shooting that left Javier, 25, dead from gunshot wounds. The incident took place at 461 Haverhill St. in Lawrence on May 14, 2021, and has since been a point of extensive investigation by law enforcement authorities.
The case, presided over by the Hon. Salim Tabit, reached its conclusion in Superior Court, where Corniel De La Cruz received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 19 years served for the murder charge. After the unfortunate event at 461 Haverhill St., he has now been held accountable for his actions that abruptly ended the life of Edward Javier. Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker expressed hope for closure for Javier’s grieving family in the wake of the trial's outcome, as reported by the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
Corniel De La Cruz also pled guilty to multiple charges connected to various violent incidents while incarcerated at the Essex County House of Correction, adding three more years to his sentence. These subsequent convictions included two felony counts of armed assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon on a corrections officer.
Concerned with the safety of his officers, Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger highlighted the importance of taking definitive action against any aggression towards law enforcement, grateful for the District Attorney’s resolute stance on the matter. Through the voice of the Essex County Sheriff's Office, he emphasized "when someone targets one of our officers, we take action," as additional sentences for Corniel De La Cruz reflect the seriousness with which the legal system treats attacks on its employees, as stated on the report by the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
Attorneys Timothy Connors and Brian Anderson represented Corniel De La Cruz during the proceedings. Angel Paredes, a co-defendant in the case, is slated for trial on November 6, and faces charges of being an accessory after the fact, assault and battery on a police officer, and witness intimidation, which is indeed a testament to the range of consequences arising from the 2021 homicide.
