League City's Helen Hall Library will continue to offer Jonathan Hillman's picture book "Big Wig" in its children’s section, despite a divided city council vote. The decision came down to a tense 4-4 tie, which effectively meant the motion to move the book did not advance, as reported by Community Impact.
After a Community Standards Review Advisory Committee suggested relocating "Big Wig" to a section where only adults could check it out, a city council vote was triggered. Details on the city council's split were shared by Houston Chronicle, noting that since this committee's inception, only two books have been flagged for relocation or removal and failed both times.
Councilman Courtney Chadwell admitted to not being impressed by the book, stating, "It’s really a bad book," but maintained that "No child that reads this book is going to be influenced by the author’s original intent," in an interview obtained by Houston Chronicle. On the other side, Councilman Chad Tressler, who voted against the movement, criticized the committee's potential bias and pointed out that “The fact of the matter is that there is nothing remotely obscene or indecent in the book, and to infer LGBTQ (depictions), one has to read it as an adult looking for that."
Resident Eloise Pérez-Lozano highlighted the timing of the debate during banned books week and framed any removal as "a passive kind of censorship," according to an interview with Houston Chronicle. On record, another local Katherine Swanson voiced concerns about government overreach and constitutional rights in remarks captured by Community Impact.
