Longboat Key has welcomed residents back after a period of recovery and repair, with town officials allowing returns starting yesterday afternoon. Entry back onto the island has been structured to begin at 1 p.m., strictly from the South via the New Pass Bridge with checkpoints requiring identification for access, a directive aimed to funnel the flow of returnees in an orderly manner amidst infrastructure revamps still underway, as reported by WFLA.
Continuing their coverage, FOX 13 News outlined additional conditions like the curfew in effect from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., re-entry will not be possible in these curfew hours, but restoration efforts persevere as Florida Power & Light works to breathe light back into the 50% of the island still shrouded in darkness due to significant power outages. A boil water notice is still in effect for safety reasons because of ongoing water problems, such as outages and low pressure.
Residents looking for information should avoid using 911 unless it’s a life-threatening emergency. Instead, they can call 941-316-1999 for inquiries. Officials also encourage water conservation during this time, as stated by the town's public works department. The island's supermarket, Publix, has reopened, providing resources for the returning population and marking a step toward normalcy, as documented by Observer. Waste Management will resume services today, contributing to the island's gradual recovery from recent challenges.
