To address sexual violence and educate the public on the nuances of consent, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has launched a striking campaign in concert with National Campus Safety Month. The initiative, spanning billboards and bus stop ads near major college campuses, aims to dispel myths surrounding consent and tackle issues of sexual assault head-on, as reported by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Seeking to inform through visuals, the campaign also extends its reach into social media.
"Every case we prosecute is unique, but one theme comes up again and again: consent," Gascón said, as stated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The campaign not only promotes awareness but also underlines the DA's commitment to survivors of sexual violence. Emphasizing his tenure's focus on specialized prosecution of sex crimes, he stated, "Advocating for consent goes hand in hand with holding those who don’t respect consent accountable, and we will not tolerate sexual violence in our community."
According to a recent release from the District Attorney's Office, these are not mere words. Under Gascón's tenure, a centralized sex crimes prosecution team now boasts 54 specialized prosecutors. This team, crafted to ensure each case receives the attention it deserves, has been trained in trauma-informed practices, highlighting the DA's focus on both the sensitivity required for these cases and the firm pursuit of justice.
Moreover, for those needing assistance, LADA's Bureau of Victim Services is available to provide support throughout the legal process. This outreach is necessary, especially considering the trauma that survivors can endure during such times, and helps maintain the thread of care that the DA's office intends to weave through the legal fabric. To request victim services, individuals are encouraged to contact the Bureau at (800) 380-3811.
