A member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is facing serious criminal charges. Deputy Bryan Cardoso has been accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at his residence in Cudahy. The allegations date back to June 2022. According to KTLA, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has charged the 31-year-old deputy and described the crime as one that involved "great violence, great bodily harm, threat of great bodily harm, and other acts disclosing a high degree of cruelty, viciousness, and callousness."
Cardoso, whose bail was set at $100,000, has since been released after posting bond. He will soon appear for his arraignment, scheduled for November 8 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. If convicted of the lewd act upon a child under age 14, he could face up to eight years in state prison, echoing a statement obtained by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
"Our office is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the perpetrator is held fully accountable. We will work diligently to support the victim through this process and to restore faith in our justice system," District Attorney George Gascón told the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The case is being prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office Sex Crimes Division and investigated by the sheriff department's own Internal Criminal Investigation Bureau.
In response to the allegations, Gascón expressed his dismay, stating, "I am heartbroken and outraged by the egregious assault on an innocent 13-year-old girl by someone who was entrusted with protecting our community. This child has endured an unimaginable violation of trust." His words underscore the gravity of the charges and the breach of public trust involved, according to reports by KTLA.
