Tragedy struck Edgewater yesterday when a fatal collision involved a motorcycle and an SUV, resulting in the death of a young man and injuries to others. According to an Anne Arundel County Police press release, officers responded to a crash on Solomon’s Island Road at Old South River Road South, just south of the South River Bridge. The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m., involving a 2020 Yamaha Motorcycle heading north and a 2003 Ford Expedition making a left turn onto Old South River Road South.
The collision was severe enough to tragically claim the life of the motorcycle's rider, 19-year-old Daniel Joseph Helmly Jr from Lothian, Maryland, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Anne Arundel County Emergency Medical Services transported him to the Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore for further examination. The occupants of the Expedition, which included a 52-year-old female from Rockville, Maryland, were lucky enough to only sustain non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals to quickly receive the care they needed.
