In a bid to arm local businesses against the swells of cyber threats, a new workshop titled "Understanding Cyber Threats: How to Recognize and Respond" is poised to unfold on October 23 at Macomb Community College South Campus. The event, a strategic offering from Macomb County Planning and Economic Development, puts a spotlight on the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures. Numbers from 2023 illustrate a stark landscape, with over 2,365 cyber incidents reported and a staggering 343 million victims left in their wake, the clamor for fortified digital defenses grows louder, according to the Macomb County website.
Housed in Building K from the hours of 8-10 a.m., the workshop aims to equip businesses with actionable intelligence against cyber criminals. On the roster of speakers, Eric Castaglia of BAE Networks plans to delve into the murky waters of the dark web and its cyber threats. With a staggering 94% of organizations encountering email security incidents in 2023, and email emerging as the reigning conduit for malware delivery, the workshop's curriculum promises to be a timely intervention.
According to information detailed by Macomb County's Announcement, other speakers poised to share their expertise include Karen Kiewski of Systems X, who will lay down the preventive measures businesses should embrace. The gravity of the situation is further underscored by the involvement of Marty D'Amico, a supervisory special agent with the FBI, who will impart knowledge on rapid, effective measures to take following a cyber compromise.
Vicky Rowinski, Director of MCPED, reinforced the criticality of current and reliable cybersecurity, stating, as per Macomb County, "Effective, updated cybersecurity compliance is more important than ever to protect our business from data theft, damage and misuse." This initiative arrives on the heels of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, amplifying its resonance with Macomb County businesses seeking to shore up their cyber barricades. Following Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the importance of being ahead of the curve in defending against such risks cannot be overstated.
