Thurston County residents can expect to encounter some slowdowns come September 9th when the Marvin Road Corridor Improvement Project kicks off. The project, which stretches from 22 Avenue SE to just north of Union Mills Road SE, aims to enhance safety and prepare for future expansion while also aiming to smoothen the flow of traffic in the area. According to a Thurston County Public Works announcement, the work is anticipated to continue through the summer of 2025, affecting local commutes for a significant duration.
Making changes such as the installation of a new roundabout at Marvin Road SE and 19th Avenue SE, and the removal of the railroad crossing south of Union Mills Road SE, the county officials aim to reduce congestion points that have long been the bane of drivers. There will also be a reduction in the speed limit across the construction zone to bolster pedestrian safety and limit traffic incidents. "During construction, alternating one-way traffic control will be in effect," said the Thurston County Public Works, urging motorists to seek alternative routes or allow for more travel time when passing through the site.
To further facilitate increased safety for pedestrians, new 10-foot-wide, paved, multi-use sidewalks will flank both sides on Marvin Road SE. These traffic and infrastructure updates are significant steps geared towards accommodating anticipated growth and ensuring that the area keeps pace with the increasing demands placed by its burgeoning population.
The county is also keeping local residents in loop about possible service interruptions especially concerning water or sewer utilities as the improvements necessitate the installation and connection of new main lines. "The City of Lacey will notify residents in advance of any temporary water or sewer service interruptions," stated the official notice, reflecting an effort to minimize inconvenience to the populace during the upgrade process.
