The spree of burglaries hitting train cars in Midtown Memphis has led police to arrest a man accused of stealing over $17,000 worth of merchandise. According to WREG, a call was made on April 23, reporting the break-in of containers on a CSX train. In a scene reminiscent of a harried heist, police found scattered luxuries – from Tory Burch shoes to large-screen TVs – on the railroad tracks, later linking these goods to one Antonio Jackson.
In recent developments, would-be burglars attempted another score on Thursday morning, targeting two train cars. Memphis police responded to the scene around 3:05 a.m. at Harbert Avenue and East Parkway. Action News 5 reported a trail of TV boxes leading to a nearby apartment complex fence. The officers encountered a male individual waiting in a Nissan near a Dodge van containing TVs in its mangled rear, connecting him to an earlier crash reported at approximately 3:20 a.m. at Jefferson Avenue and Rembert Street.
In the case involving Jackson, authorities connected the figurative dots using phone records, which placed him at the scene of the April burglary and the dicey moment when a Chevrolet van nearly collided with an officer. "Police say his phone records also show that he was there at the time the van almost struck the officer," indicated a report by WREG.
Jackson, now facing multiple charges, including burglary, theft of property, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and interference with property utilized by railroads, is set to appear in court today. His bond has not been issued, and the legal proceedings will likely shed further light on the methods and motivations behind these brazen acts of theft.
