The Jacksonville community was shaken by the news of a 22-year-old man, Derrick Byron Nicholls, found fatally shot in his car at the I-295 and I-10 interchange earlier this May. Nicholls succumbed to his injuries after being discovered in the driver’s seat with gunshot wounds. He was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, as reported by ActionNewsJax.
Yesterday, a significant development surfaced as the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Santos Saleem Herring, age 24, in connection to Nicholls' death. Prior to this case, Herring was already detained in the Duval County Jail on unrelated charges, including trafficking in cannabis and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It seems the authorities were able to conclusively link evidence at the scene to Herring, leading to a second-degree murder charge. This evidence is what allowed officers to firmly close in on the suspect, despite Herring already being behind bars for other crimes.
The arrest was the culmination of an investigation spearheaded by the JSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit, alongside the State Attorney’s Office, as noted by First Coast News. However, this case is far from closed. The investigation remains active, with detectives still attempting to identify other possible individuals involved.
Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that might help to possibly bring greater clarity to the circumstances surrounding the tragic shooting. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reminds the community that any piece of information could prove crucial and urges anyone with insights to contact them at 904-630-0500, according to News4Jax. As families and friends mourn the senseless loss of Derrick Nicholls, the hope for justice hinges on the continued efforts of law enforcement and the community’s cooperation.
