A man was critically injured following an exchange of gunfire in the Grahamwood neighborhood of Memphis, prompting the Memphis Police Department (MPD) to respond to multiple crime scenes on Tuesday evening. According to FOX13 Memphis, the injured man escaped his attacker by jumping onto a city garbage truck while being shot at. Officers later found the victim lying on the sidewalk at the intersection of Macon and Salem streets around 5 p.m., suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The violence unfolded when the man, attempting to flee, hopped on the garbage truck and pleaded with the crew to drive away after being shot. Doorbell cameras in the neighborhood caught the beginning of the incident on Isabelle Street, where the two individuals were initially speaking in a driveway before the situation escalated, with one man pulling out a semiautomatic pistol and firing at the other. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and saw the victim being pursued by a gunman. Nearby residents reported that another vehicle, a Toyota, was also struck by the gunfire during the event.
Neighborhood witnesses recounted two young men exchanging gunfire, utilizing cars as shelter from the bullets. One sanitation crew member recalled the disturbing scene, stating, "We saw the guy with the gun, we seen him point down and the guy got shot in the back." A resident who witnessed the chase, Stu Mendenhall, described hearing "zip, zip, zip" as bullets flew dangerously close to a family enjoying the weather in their front yard, as detailed by Action News 5.
The truck, stained with the blood of the wounded man, eventually stopped on North Graham Street, marking the location of one of three separate crime scenes identified by MPD. According to WREG, additional scenes were connected to the incident, found at the 1000 block of Salem Road and Jackson and Macon. The assailant reportedly fled the scene in a blue sedan and on foot, prompting police to solicit information from the public through CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
The shooting has left the victim in critical condition at Regional One Hospital.
