Early Sunday morning, a shooting in Opa-Locka resulted in one man hospitalized with grave injuries and the detention of eight individuals. The incident, which occurred on the 13800 block of Northwest 22nd Avenue, is currently under police investigation. According to WSVN, responders found the victim with at least one gunshot wound shortly after 4 a.m.
Having been shot in the leg, the victim was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, as confirmed by Opa-Locka's city manager Darvin Williams. While the victim's condition remains critical, Opa-locka Police, with the aid of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units, began the investigation into the shooting's circumstances. Found sleeping through the gunshots, Joey, a local resident, was woken by the police's presence and the ensuing crime scene tape, as reported by CBS News Miami.
The impact of the violent episode stretched to the congregation of Logos Baptist Church, who encountered the crime scene on their way to Sunday worship. Pastor Robert Stephens expressed his dismay, having to begin the day with such a grim reality, stating, "It was unfortunate that our members had to witness this crime while coming into worship." He highlighted the gravity of the incident during Mass, specifically on a day that was supposed to celebrate friends and family, according to CBS News Miami.
Meanwhile, the police did not immediately provide details about the detained individuals or any possible suspect in the shooting. Churchgoers had to pass by the active investigation scene. Anyone with information on the shooting has been urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, with the potential for anonymity and a monetary reward. Police continue their efforts to uncover the motivations and sequence of events that led to this act of violence.
