A teenager's fishing trip on the Duck River took a dire turn last Thursday, resulting in a dramatic rescue by the Maury County Fire Department. The young fisher fell down an embankment by the Sowell Mill Pike Bridge around 5 p.m., necessitating an urgent response from rescue crews.
Following the incident, the teen sustained an injury that left them needing to be rescued off the embankment, according to WKRN. On the scene, a paramedic supervisor from Maury Regional EMS provided immediate care, while firefighters orchestrated a 3:1 haul system to hoist the teenager to safety. The crews had previously trained for such an event at this location, ensuring a swift and efficient operation.
The sophisticated rescue employed a stokes basket and a rope system to secure and extract the injured teen, who was delivered to an ambulance with serious, though non-life-threatening, injuries. This was confirmed in a statement obtained by the Maury County Fire Department's Facebook page.
These preparations by the fire crew, practiced in the exact location and scenario, played a role that is indispensable to the rescue's success. "The department said it has trained in that specific location with that specific scenario, which led to the rescue being completed quickly and efficiently," recounted the account shared by WKRN, highlighting the crucial nature of readiness and practice. The victim's current condition has not been updated since the rescue.
