In a move drawing attention for both its generosity and timing, the City of Memphis has announced that it will be granting a one-time bonus of $3,000 to all of its retirees. As this financial boon was distributed last week, retirees across the city found a little extra padding in their bank accounts—a gesture of gratitude for the years of service they dedicated to the municipality.
In details published on the city's official website, Mayor Paul Young stated that the decision to award the bonus is rooted in acknowledging the long-standing contributions of the city's retirees. This resolve comes even as the city grapples with the budget constraints that are projected for the fiscal year 2025. Approximately 5,600 retirees stand to gain from the Mayor's initiative, costing the Pension Fund a substantial sum of $16.7 million.
"City of Memphis retirees have made invaluable contributions to our community, and it is right that they are recognized and supported," Mayor Young was quoted on the city's website. He also voiced an eagerness to examine future budgets for potential opportunities to further support the retirees.
