The City of Mesa has selected a group of enthusiastic young individuals as winners of its Mesa Youth Climate Action Fund (MYCAF) grants, tasked with the charge to actively tackle local environmental challenges. These grants are designed to support initiatives led by youth aged 15 to 24, either residing in or attending school in Mesa, or whose environmental projects will directly benefit this Arizonian community. Each grant, amounting to as much as $5,000, serves as the seed funding to grow their proposed climate solutions from a budding idea into a fully flowering operation.

"I am proud of these students who took the initiative to thoughtfully identify a climate issue in Mesa and develop a solution to address it," Mayor John Giles said in a statement obtained by the City of Mesa. Giles goes on to emphasize the necessity of innovative thinking, especially from the youth, to effectively combat the complexities of climate change. Twelve groups, including those from BASIS Environmental Club to Westwood High School Future Farmers of America, have been chosen to to quickly begin implementing their plans.

Mayor Giles, as well as other dignitaries, will reportedly attend a celebratory event to recognize these environmental pioneers. The event provides a platform not just for commendation but for connection, enabling the young climate activists to network with like hearts and minds. This gathering is set for the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 24, at The Post, 26 N MacDonald Drive, as detailed by the City of Mesa official website.

The initiative, bolstered by a $50,000 contribution from Bloomberg Philanthropies, shows a significant commitment to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among youth.
