An officer-involved shooting in Mesa has left one man dead after an early morning encounter with police yesterday. The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. near the intersection of 104th Street and Bramble Avenue, north of Broadway Road, according to AZFamily. Mesa Police stated that the incident started when an officer attempted to stop a 37-year-old male bicyclist near Broadway Road and Cheshire Avenue.

The man, failing to comply with the officer's commands, fled northwest along a canal. Police later located him in an empty wash alongside the canal, where the situation quickly escalated. "The male produced a weapon and pointed it at the officer. That is when the officer-involved shooting occurred," according to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. With the suspect down, Mesa Fire and Police crews provided emergency first aid before rushing him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that the officer involved was not injured during the incident. The Mesa Police have stated that they are not searching for any additional suspects related to this case. As part of the ongoing investigation, the East Valley Critical Response Team, led by Chandler PD, will be reviewing the incident. This procedure is in accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

In the wake of the shooting, residents of the nearby neighborhood have expressed their concerns. "My girlfriend heard three gunshots in a row. She came into the house and woke me up. I was scared because it sounded real close,” Julie Hensley told AZFamily. Hensley lives directly across from where the shooting took place and mentioned that authorities had inquired whether her home security cameras captured any part of the incident. The footage, however, only showed the aftermath, capturing sirens and flashing lights from a distance.

This latest incident marks the 42nd officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 69th in Arizona for the year 2024. The sharp increase in such confrontations is likely to spark further discussions around police procedures and community relations as investigations into these shootings continue.
