In Miami-Dade County, a photographic tribute to the queen of salsa, Celia Cruz, marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on September 20, with county officials and community members converging to celebrate her enduring impact. According to Miami-Dade County's announcement, the exhibit, which features a timeline covering Cruz’s life and career, was inaugurated at the Stephen P. Clark Center and will remain accessible to the public until October 18.
The celebration gathered notables such as Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and County Commission Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III among other commissioners and Vice Consul of Spain in Miami, Ana Vinas. Festivities included music inspired by Cruz, with officials being presented with the 2024 Celia Cruz Quarter, a token reflecting the singer's Cuban American legacy. Despite a misspelling, the quarter serves as a testament to her cultural significance, as noted by Miami-Dade County.
Originating as a week-long observance in 1968 and later expanded into a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the diverse cultures and histories of American Latino communities, officially starting on September 15. This coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries, followed closely by those of Mexico and Chile, and includes Columbus Day ceremonies which this year falls on October 14.
To further celebrate Hispanic heritage, the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB), which oversees the event, has scheduled an array of activities throughout the month. The public is encouraged to engage with these offerings, as mentioned on the Miami-Dade County's website. HAAB’s meetings are publicly accessible, inviting residents to partake in discussions shaping their community's inclusive future.
The broader mission of the Office of Community Advocacy is the cultivation of unity and inclusivity across Miami-Dade County. With oversight of 12 advisory boards, including HAAB, the office is a nexus for resident engagement with a variety of subscriber-based updates available through multiple social media platforms.
