The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commission has voted to pass a major stormwater management and flood mitigation ordinance. The Critical Impervious Ordinance, spearheaded by Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, and co-sponsored by fellow Commissioners, aims at revamping environmental and zoning regulations to bolster flood protection and improve water quality across the county, as per information released by Miami-Dade County's official website.
The ordinance, which has been over a year in the making, had extensive input from various experts, municipalities, and environmental stakeholders. Commissioner Cohen Higgins pointed out the ordinance's significance, saying, "This ordinance reflects Miami-Dade County's unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and proactive stormwater management." She elaborated on how the revised standards would benefit communities by mitigating flood risk and safeguarding water quality, as statements confirmed via the county release.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava backed the ordinance, noting the day-to-day realities of climate change faced by residents, from extreme weather to the encroachment of rising seas. She remarked on how the new regulations are set to position Miami-Dade as a community set to withstand the future's environmental trials, "By increasing the amount of rainfall that can be filtered through and captured in the ground, we're reducing our community's risk of flooding and keeping dirty water out of Biscayne Bay," said Mayor Levine Cava in a statement obtained by Miami-Dade County.
Lourdes Gomez, the head of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, underlined the ordinance's inclusive development process, ensuring it was "comprehensive and effective."
