Miami-Dade County is at the center of a heated debate involving law enforcement and celebrity athlete Tyreek Hill. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava spoke out after bodycam footage of an encounter between Hill and Miami-Dade Police was released. In a statement to WSVN, Mayor Levine Cava said, "I’m in complete agreement with what the police department and what our Chief of Public Safety is doing." She emphasized the need for transparency, noting, "We decided that it was really important for the public to see the footage. We know that the situation was not one that we wish to be repeated."

A bodycam video shows Officer Danny Torres, a 27-year veteran of MDPD, placing his knee on Hill's back during the course of what began as a traffic stop. Officer Torres's attorney, responding to his client being placed on leave, stated that this move was premature and that Torres should be reinstated immediately. Hill, on the other hand, was cited for a seat belt violation and careless driving and is now calling for Torres' firing as well as pursuing legal action, according to WSVN.

A statement from Mayor Levine Cava that was circulated on X. The statement not only commended the mayor’s swift actions in initiating an investigation and ensuring the public had access to the footage but also acknowledged a broader need for change.

While MDPD Director Stephanie Daniels was present at the 9/11 tribute where Mayor Levine Cava spoke on the matter, the director declined to provide a comment to WSVN, simply saying, “No comment.”
