In a move that celebrates the legacy of a local sports legend, Miami-Dade Parks has renamed Southridge Park to honor Coach Sam Burley. Yesterday, the park at 11250 SW 192 Street now bears the name Coach Sam Burley Park after a special ceremony marking the tribute. Gathered were county officials, community members, and, of course, Coach Burley himself.

As reported by Miami-Dade County's official release, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava voiced her enthusiasm about the dedication, stating, "Renaming this park after Coach Sam Burley is a heartfelt tribute to a leader who has dedicated his life to shaping the future for our youth." Burley's influence is witnessed on the playing fields and in the classroom where his dedication to sports and education has been instrumental in inspiring multiple generations.

The distinguished coaching career of Coach Burley began back in 1972 and has included stints leading cross-country and track and field teams to prosperity, notably at Miami Southridge Senior High, where he led teams to six state championships. "That is why I was honored to sponsor the resolution to rename Southridge Park to Coach Sam Burley Park," said Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee in a sentiment echoed across the local community, as per Miami-Dade County's official release.

Maria Nardi, Miami-Dade Parks Director, reflected on Burley’s enduring legacy when she said, "We are proud to rename Southridge Park to Coach Sam Burley Park, a fitting tribute to an extraordinary leader," according to the official release. Burley's commitment has transcended the realm of athletics, extending into the community where he has taken roles such as chairing the volunteer program for the Special Olympics and establishing a non-profit that fosters youth health and leadership.

The 20-acre Coach Sam Burley Park, complete with amenities like a synthetic running track and a playground, is set to become even more community-focused with the development of a new community center and aquatic facility. These future additions will provide a central hub for fitness, recreation, and youth development.
