A peculiar incident unfolded in a Miami Beach parking garage this Monday when a man found himself trapped inside a Corvette he is accused of attempting to steal. Miami NBC affiliate NBC Miami reports that the man, identified as 33-year-old Ravesh Rabindranauth, became the center of attention around 12:48 p.m. when he was seen getting into an unlocked Chevrolet Corvette and sitting in the driver's seat without leaving.
The car’s owner Julio Solano, who runs an exotic and luxury vehicle rental company, recorded the encounter as he confronted Rabindranauth, telling him, "My brother, this is not your car. This is my car," according to a video taken at the scene after the owner and a witness alerted the police to the bizarre scenario, Solano was quoted by New York Post when the suspect found himself unable to exit due to an unconventional door mechanism and the car's security features which prevented the electrical components from working without the keys.
Authorities, upon arrival, witnessed Rabindranauth struggling with the car's controls and subsequently drew their weapons after seeing him reach for the dashboard, possibly in an attempt to start the vehicle. The situation, which was initially non-violent, reportedly became tense after video recording ceased; Solano stated to NBC Miami that the suspect began hitting the window and rummaging through his backpack in agitation.
Police were able to open the doors and ordered Rabindranauth out of the car, and onto the floor where he was handcuffed, after which he allegedly told officers that he had been sent to pick up a Lamborghini Urus SUV but found the Corvette instead when the Lamborghini and a Ford Mustang were locked, Solano advised Premiere Auto Miami—the company that stores similar vehicles in the garage—and others to "Just be alert, you know when you’re getting in and out of your car, be vigilant, be alert of your surroundings," echoing the need for vigilance in areas where valuable assets are kept, this statement according to the New York Post. Rabindranauth was taken into custody and later charged with burglary of an unoccupied conveyance; he is being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bond set at $2,500.
