The Miami-Dade County Parks system is poised to enhance its recreation offerings with the addition of eight new pickleball courts at Tropical Park. On October 2, Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, alongside Vice Chairman and District 10 Commissioner Anthony Rodriguez, are set to unveil these facilities designed to cater to the sport's burgeoning fan base in South Florida.

During the inauguration event, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava lauded the efforts of the Parks Department, emphasizing that “these new pickleball courts are a great addition to our wonderful parks system and will add even more quality of life for residents who love playing this incredibly popular sport,” according to the official Miami-Dade County press release.

The latest courts arrive as an expansion to Tropical Park's existing four, now complete with lighting to allow for evening play. These additions are a response to a clear increase in demand; the Association of Pickleball Professionals reports a staggering 36.5 million players across the United States as of January 2023.

"These eight additional courts will meet a real demand, given the sport’s rising popularity," Vice Chairman Rodriguez told Miami-Dade County News, noting the area's demographics. These courts are a fraction of the 73 scattered throughout Miami-Dade County parks, with Miami-Dade Parks Director Maria Nardi expressing eagerness for the community to engage with this enhanced outdoor recreational space.

The dedication of the courts at Tropical Park, which was built on a historic horse track and boasts over 1.5 million visitors annually, aligns with Miami-Dade Parks' goal of fostering community health, fitness, and enjoyment. Alongside pickleball, the park offers a host of recreational opportunities, including an Equestrian Center, fitness zones, a boxing center, tennis, track and field amenities, and four baseball fields. The County’s Westchester Cultural Arts Center also finds its home within the park grounds, adding a cultural facet to the recreational experience.
