On Wednesday, the Milton City Council greenlighted the expansion of the Milton Montessori School, paving the way for an additional 160 students to receive education within new walls spanning 24,000 square feet — a significant increase from the current capacity. The Milton Herald reported that the property, which is situated across from Forsyth County and hemmed in by several residential developments, has enjoyed growth since its humble beginnings with two classrooms in 2008, expanding to a 6,000 square foot building in 2017.
While the expansion seems a boon for education, the move to approve the new structure wasn't without its variances and citizen concerns, addressing public comments on pedestrian safety and the City Council's unanimous agreement to maintain current sidewalk width standards along Bethany Bend, despite a proposed reduction — Diana Wheeler, Interim Community Development Director, commented on the intent to grade for a wider path, part of Milton’s expanding trail network. Owner Biju Eappen relayed his gratitude towards City staff for their efforts that led to the successful vote, telling the Milton Herald, "We worked hard to get where we are now."
In parallel events, the evening began with a reflection from City Church Pastor Billy Lowe on community blessings and the stark reminder of the recent school shooting tragedy in Winder, Georgia, further highlighting the meeting's later pivot to the sobering recognition of September as Milton Mental Wellness Month, an initiative aligning with global efforts for suicide prevention awareness. The month-long campaign is set to feature proactive measures that include a particular focus on emotional intelligence, spearheaded by a webinar hosted by the LRJ Foundation; details are available at the city's dedicated mental wellness page.
Safety and community enhancement also permeated the Council's approvals, which included the okay for a new STEM Lego program in partnership with Play-Well TEKnowledgies and the replacement of an oil fence at Legacy Park with a fresh four-board style enclosure Spectrum Fence Company will provide, in addition to sanctioning the sale of a strip of public parkland to facilitate neighborhood adjustments, enhancements, all part of Milton’s mission to enrich the city fabric while engaging its residents in collective growth and well-being. The next steps for the city budgetary considerations, set to occur at the September 16 Regular Meeting, loom on the horizon as the city continues to finetune its fiscal blueprint for 2025.
