In a move to combat the affordable housing crisis in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors has cemented their commitment with a unanimous decision, approving a considerable $2.5 million towards the revamp of the historic Marcia P. Coggs Human Services Center into a mixed-use development featuring 65 affordable housing units alongside commercial spaces, according to the Milwaukee County recent news release.
Zeroing in on sustainability and financial prudence the project, which is expected to cost $32 million in total, is being funded through various avenues including low-income housing tax credits, Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority's permanent debt, yet the budget will not burden the county taxpayers as the funding redirects money initially set aside for the building's demolition, the announcement detailed.
"There is no budget shortfall here. This investment is strategic, and by choosing redevelopment over demolition, we are not only preserving an important piece of Milwaukee’s history but also investing in the future of our community. This project will pay dividends for years to come, both financially and environmentally," 2nd Vice Chair Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones reassured in statements obtained by the Milwaukee County news release.
The inclusive project not only caters to the affordable housing needs but also reserves space for Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services by setting aside 17,000 square feet of office space, and energizes community interactions with a 1,500-square-foot café strategically located on the ground floor, additional details from the Milwaukee County news release echo the intent to serve diverse needs under one revitalized roof.
