A man from Minneapolis, Jackie Gerald Smith, 55, has been handed down a sentence of 135 months in federal prison. Smith's sentencing comes after he pled guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. According to a press release from the United States Attorney's Office, Smith, alongside his co-conspirator Damon Antone Young, 49, orchestrated a drug distribution operation extending throughout Minnesota from late October 2022 to mid-January 2023. United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced the sentencing, which also includes five years of supervised release following the prison term.
Details from the court documents indicate an undercover operation led to controlled substance purchases from Smith and Young, culminating in law enforcement discovering significant quantities of narcotics. During a raid on January 11, 2023, officers seized 368 grams of methamphetamine and 12 grams of fentanyl from a local residence. Another search, on January 18, targeted storage units rented by Young, turned up 1.35 kilograms of fentanyl powder and approximately 2.83 pounds of methamphetamine. Both searches were instrumental in the unraveling of the trafficking network.
Smith's guilty plea took place on April 9 this year, before U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen, who delivered his sentence. His accomplice, Young, followed suit with a guilty plea to the same charge on August 27. The sentencing for Young remains pending. The investigations carried out by Homeland Security Investigations and the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team were critical in bringing Smith and Young to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Raphael B. Coburn took on the prosecution of the case.
While Smith awaits the commencement of his prison term, the legal system prepares to pronounce the fate of his co-defendant, Young, hoping to provide a tangible response to these continuous drug problems plaguing communities.
