According to a bulletin from the MPD, officers were able to promptly apprehend suspects related to two separate instances of violent crimes this past week, utilizing this new approach. This includes the arrest of a man connected to two homicides and a non-fatal shooting, as well as the capture of three suspects involved in a series of aggravated robberies.
Chief Brian O'Hara announced the strategy following a spike in violent incidents, particularly aggravated robberies. The protocol calls for the immediate redeployment of officers from non-emergency situations to swiftly saturate the affected area, with the aim of quickly apprehending any suspects and halting the ongoing violence. According to the MPD's release, their law enforcement partners are also requested to assist without delay.
In the early hours along Lake Street in the Uptown area, after multiple victims were reportedly robbed at gunpoint within 45 minutes, the MPD activated the protocol. Teams, including MPD officers and deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, flooded the area, while a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter pursued the suspects into North Minneapolis. After a vehicle chase, one adult and two juveniles were arrested following their attempt to flee on foot. "The collective commitment and tireless efforts of MPD officers and our key law enforcement partners have once again stopped violent criminals on a crime spree from further terrorizing our community," O'Hara was quoted in the bulletin.
The same approach was instrumental in apprehending a suspect accused of two murders near homeless encampments and a non-fatal shooting earlier in the week. The man was arrested by the MPD less than fifteen minutes after he allegedly shot someone at the 2300 block of 17th Avenue South on a Wednesday. Their quick action was facilitated through coordinated redeployment of officers across precincts, emphasizing the effectiveness of the new protocol in combating such violent crime sprees. The MPD's report includes tips for the public on how to observe and report details of any encounters with armed individuals to aid law enforcement efforts.
MPD's alert also recaps a series of robberies, detailing their locations and the nature of the offenses, as well as the case numbers related to the arrests. These accounts, which span from Lake Street West to the 2800 block of 31st Street West, paint a stark picture of the pressing need for such tactical law enforcement responses.
