In a recent turn of events, the Minneapolis Police Department is delving into the details of a fatal shooting that occurred in South Minneapolis. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, officers from the Fifth Precinct were dispatched to the corner of 1 Av S/19 St E following reports of a shooting on the evening of September 3, as per the Minneapolis Police Department.
Upon their arrival just after 7:00 pm, law enforcement officials discovered a man in his 20s suffering from critical gunshot injuries. The officers offered medical assistance until EMS personnel took over, but despite all life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Minneapolis Police Department details that preliminary evidence suggests an altercation occurred between the victim, who was part of a group of about ten people, and another man, which escalated to the shots being fired.
Chief O’Hara expressed his frustrations with the incident, stating, "It’s frustrating because this is a location that we know has been problematic in the past. We do have police presence here. It’s frustrating knowing that we can’t prevent everything." He continued, "We’re here to try and speak on behalf of those that can no longer speak for themselves," in a statement conveyed by the Minneapolis Police Department. In response to the tragedy, officers secured the area and canvassed the neighborhood for information and potential witnesses.
Investigative units from the MPD, as well as MPD Forensic Scientists, were dispatched to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident further. As the investigation is ongoing, no arrests have been made as of yet. The MPD is actively seeking information from the public and has encouraged anyone with knowledge regarding the incident to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit tips online at www.CrimeStoppersMN.org.
