The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released the names of the two officers involved in a fatal shooting that occurred last Thursday in Belle Plaine. The officers identified as Aaron Bohlen, a 10-year law enforcement veteran, and Lance Christianson, who has been in the field for 20 years, have been placed on standard critical incident leave. The BCA reported that Seantrell Tyreese Murdock, 29, died from multiple gunshot wounds following a confrontation with the officers.
According to preliminary findings by the BCA, Murdock, who was being sought in connection to a St. Paul homicide, was confronted by officers as he attempted to quickly walk away from a residence on the 100 block of Meridian Street. The confrontation escalated near South Chestnut and East Prairie streets when officers decided to discharge their weapons, fatally wounding Murdock. Following the incident, the officers were said to have provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office has affirmed the identity of the deceased as Murdock and cited the cause of death as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting. No other injuries were reported during the altercation. The BCA noted that a handgun was recovered from the site of the shooting, further informing the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Body camera footage from the involved officers is noted to have captured portions of the confrontation, and this evidence is currently under review as part of the ongoing investigation.
The BCA has emphasized that their in-depth investigation into the case is still in its initial phases. Moreover, once concluded, they are to provide their findings without any recommendations for charges directly to the Scott County Attorney's Office for review. The fallout from this incident is likely to extend beyond the immediate facts, piercing into the heart of ongoing debates regarding police conduct and the use of force.
