The country music scene is gearing up for its big night as the 58th Annual CMA Awards reveals its slate of nominees, with Morgan Wallen topping the charts with seven nods. Close behind him are Cody Johnson and Chris Stapleton, each with five nominations, as reported by CelebrityAccess. Among the surprises this year includes Post Malone, a newcomer to the country, snagging four nods, tying with Lainey Wilson.
Despite his turbulent past and the controversy surrounding his use of a racial slur caught on video, Wallen has clawed his way back to the CMA's good graces. Billboard noted that Wallen hadn’t won at the CMAs since he was crowned New Artist of the Year four years ago, a victory soon overshadowed by his public misstep.
In the category of Entertainer of the Year, Wallen finds himself in the company of Combs, Jelly Roll, Stapleton, and Wilson, battling it out for the evening's top honors. This sector on the list is collision-heavy with talent; Stapleton is facing his eighth Entertainer of the Year nomination without a win, the most nods without clinching the category in CMA history. Jelly Roll, on a different note of firsts, receives his maiden nom in this elite group. The eligibility period for these awards, running from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, has meant some heavy-hitters like Zach Bryan’s "The Great American Bar Scene" and Post Malone's "F-1 Trillion" fell just outside this year's consideration window, as was pointed out by Billboard. Jelly Roll's album "Whitsitt Chapel," meanwhile, leveraged the CMA's recency consumption rule to secure its spot among the nominations.
A diverse array of first-time nominees this year is shaking up the status quo. From Hoskins to Bailey Zimmerman, a fresh wave of artists is arriving on the CMA scene, their eyes set on the prize. CelebrityAccess highlighted these newcomers, signifying a possible shift in the tides of country music fame and prestige.
Lainey Wilson, who shares the same number of nominations as Malone, is also vying for the night's highest commendation, Entertainer of the Year, alongside her nods for Single and Female Vocalist of the Year as reported by The Tennessean. With her track "Watermelon Moonshine," she's looking to add more hardware to her collection of CMAs.
Notably absent from the list is Beyoncé, whose "Cowboy Carter" album she asserted on Instagram was a ‘Beyoncé’ album, not a country album. This clarification comes years after her contentious appearance at the CMAs with The Chicks, the moment from which her latest work was born, as Billboard caught her saying.
As the November 20 air date for the ceremony approaches, fans and industry insiders alike are eager to see who will take home the coveted awards, with the final round of voting by CMA members slated to close on October 29. The CMA Awards broadcast will commence live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena at 8 pm EST on ABC and will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
