Following her daughter April Holt's passing in July 2023, Dickerson challenged the initial ruling, leading to a confession by April's husband, Donovan Holt, regarding his involvement in the tragic occurrence.
Dickerson's relentless pursuit for justice began when she was informed about her daughter's demise, initially ruled a suicide by the Metro Nashville Police Department. April was discovered with a plastic bag taped around her neck, sparking doubt in Dickerson's mind about the nature of her daughter's end, especially given Donovan's "panic upset" call and his subsequent actions, which included presenting her April's phone and allowing her full control over medical decisions, a gesture Dickerson found suspicious. Despite the closing of her daughter's case, Dickerson insisted, "I'm not done, I'm going to keep investigating," as she told WSMV. Her unyielding dedication eventually compelled the MNPD to reevaluate their findings, leading to a 47-page report that identified Donovan Holt's fingerprints on the duct tape roll and ultimately, his confession to strangling April.
Dickerson's dissatisfaction with the current charges—reckless homicide, false reporting, and tampering with evidence—was evident in her statements to multiple news outlets. She argued that the charges should be escalated to first-degree murder and include child endangerment, given that her daughter had asked Donovan for a divorce before her death, and Donovan had, according to Dickerson, shared a meal with their son after committing the crime, she relayed this in an interview with FOX 17 News. In addition to seeking justice, Dickerson is fighting for full custody of April’s son and planning to establish a grief recovery clinic to support other individuals facing similar heartache.
According to WKRN, this perseverance was personified when Dickerson, recording a conversation with Donovan, obtained a verbal admittance of the act—"He just goes into how he killed her and he described how he killed her," as she disclosed in her account of the pivotal moment.
