A training exercise at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport took an unexpected turn Thursday morning when a Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) aircraft containing a student and flight instructor ran off the runway. The plane, part of MTSU's Department of Aerospace training fleet, was engaged in a takeoff maneuver when the incident occurred. This situation led to a temporary closure of the runway and the suspension of flight operations at the airport, as reported by WSMV.
Both the student pilot and instructor emerged from the potentially dangerous scenario without harm. The exercise that went awry was designed to simulate an engine failure and train the pilot in appropriate response measures. A bystander observed that the aircraft's landing gear appeared to have collapsed and noted damage to two propellers. In a statement obtained by WKRN, Jimmy Hart, MTSU's Senior Director of News & Media Relations, confirmed that the aircraft remained within the runway safety area and that maintenance personnel were working to remove it.
The university has a robust program within their Department of Aerospace, dedicated to educating future aviators. In response to the incident, MTSU made the decision to suspend all flight activities until the scene was secured and normal operations could be safely resumed. This was reported by NewsChannel5.
MTSU's swift action to halt flight operations highlights the inherent risks that come with aviation training and the importance of enforced safety measures. The university's training program is a cornerstone in the education of aspiring pilots and incidents like these underscore the challenges encountered on the path to becoming a skilled aviator. Details surrounding the cause of the runway excursion have not been immediately released as the investigation into the incident continues.
