A fire rapidly consumed an oceanfront house in Scituate, Massachusetts, drawing a robust response from emergency crews, according to reports from WHDH. The blaze, which was reported around 3:15 p.m. at the house located at 50 Oceanside Drive, required support from several neighboring towns' fire departments due to challenging conditions exacerbated by Friday's strong winds.
The Scituate Police Department and firefighters from Cohasset, Hingham, Marshfield, Norwell, and Pembroke to quickly mobilize were part of the joint effort to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. "Scituate on the coastline on a windy day, we've had it before — 30 mph winds just push that fire right from one building to the next, it's just doubling in size until we can get here and get the water on it," a Scituate Police representative was quoted by WHDH.
No occupants were inside the beachfront residence when the fire started, and fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. The home reportedly is not inhabited year-round, which possibly reduced the risk of casualties. The cause of the fire remains under official investigation, as per details from a NBC Boston report.
Despite the severity of the situation, Peter Benkart, whose mother and sister lived in the house, relayed a sense of relief that no one was hurt. "All my sister's belongings, all my mother's things up in smoke," Benkart told WHDH, acknowledging the material loss but grateful for the safety of his family. The incident, while devastating property-wise, serves to remind that possessions can to ultimately be replaced, and that the true value lies in human wellbeing and life.
