Major changes are arriving at Muskegon County Airport with nearly $24 million dedicated to upgrades and a new airline in anticipation of increased traveler demand. The terminal, constructed three decades past, is receiving a $2.9 million modernization effort, aiming to replace what Muskegon County Airport Director Ken Efting described as "original 1994 glass" and carpet to bring the facilities up to current expectations. According to FOX 17, enhancements include the addition of restrooms, an updated front façade, and a revitalized restaurant space.
The Muskegon airport, which has seen a severe slump in passenger traffic, descending by 80% since 2019, seems ready for a resurgence. "We're trying to bring air service back from the brink of extinction," Efting said, as per MLive. After dealings with Southern Airways Express, which had difficulty with reliability and weather conditions, the transition to Denver Air Connection, with federal approval pending, promises better adaptability to Michigan winters and improved services.
Infrastructure enhancements extend beyond cosmetic changes to pivotal operational improvements. With a significant $20.3 million federal investment, the airport will shift the taxiway and upgrade 25% of its pavement to align with modern aviation standards. This move includes the adoption of energy-efficient LED lighting and is considered crucial for the airport's role in the West Michigan economy.
Reflecting on the facelift, Efting commented, "The terminal is going to get a great facelift", as reported by FOX 17. He seems hopeful that these improvements, alongside consistent and reliable air service, will be a foundation for future growth. Future operations will maintain continuity as the airport remains open throughout the construction phases, ensuring travelers can still access flights even as enhancements are being made.
