As flu season approaches, the Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) is making it easier for Nashville residents to get ahead of the curve. Officials announced that a pop-up flu shot clinic will be set up ahead of the Tuesday, October 1 Metro Council meeting, as part of the initiation for 2024's #FightFluNashville Campaign, according to a recent announcement by the Metro Nashville official website. Free flu vaccinations will be available without the need for appointments, insurance, or any other coverage on the second-floor mezzanine at the Historic Courthouse and City Hall from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
"Protecting yourself and others from the flu this season is very important, and getting your flu vaccine is a great way to start," Dr. Joanna Shaw-KaiKai, Interim MPHD Director of Health, told the Metro Nashville. She emphasized the significance of the vaccine, especially with numerous events on Nashville's horizon. Last year, on October 17, 2023, MPHD hosted a similar event that successfully administered over 60 flu shots to attendees, including council members and Metro employees.
Vice Mayor Angie Henderson also stressed the importance of public figures taking the lead on health initiatives. "I am glad Metro Health will be back with us again this year. It is important for elected officials to lead by example when it comes to public health," she highlighted the need for leaders to actively participate in promoting vaccination in a statement obtained by Metro Nashville.
Looking forward, MPHD has planned the annual #FightFluNashville Day for October 15, in which five different sites will offer flu shots via drive-thru or walk-up services at no cost. The Lentz Public Health Center will set up a drive-thru clinic functioning from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., aiming to further incentivize residents to arm themselves against the flu, with continuous availability of free flu shots in MPHD clinics throughout the rest of the season. For those planning to use TennCare or Medicare Part B, it's advised to bring your insurance card as these plans will cover the vaccination fee. Another option awaits adults with private insurance at a fee of $40, and a sliding fee scale is available for qualifying individuals.
The MPHD encourages everyone over the age of six months to get a flu shot, emphasizing that those at higher risk for severe illness from the flu should particularly consider vaccination. This year's vaccine is designed to guard against three different flu strains, ensuring broader protection for the community. Flu shots are currently available at MPHD's three preventive health clinics through scheduled appointments, with walk-ins accommodated until 2:30 p.m. Appointments may be made by contacting the listed health centers directly.
