A youth was arrested on gun-related charges after a brief pursuit by police officers in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Officials reported the arrest happened following a surveillance operation in an area known for recent gun violence.
According to a Facebook post by the New Bedford Police Department, at about 6 PM on September 16th, detectives were watching the vicinity of County St. and Austin St. when a juvenile male caught their attention. After making eye contact with the officers, the juvenile began to run and attempted to conceal an object by tucking it into his waistband.
The chase led west on Studley St., with the individual taking a turn into a driveway, leaping over a fence, and eventually emerging on Hazard St., where Detective George Coto apprehended him. Meanwhile, Officer Mark Raposo located a discarded Taurus G2C handgun, stocked with 10 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, under a vehicle near the chase.
The department has charged the unnamed minor with carrying a loaded high-capacity firearm without a license, possession of ammunition, and trespassing. Det. Nathaniel Almeida was the arresting officer who took the juvenile into custody. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward and offer tips through the department's website or by phone.
