A New Orleans man, Travis Jordan, has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the plea, citing violations of federal law. At 39 years old, Jordan could face up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, three years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory assessment fee.
The incident occurred on a February evening when Jordan, reportedly intoxicated, tried to enter the Saint Bar in Orleans Parish but was refused entry. Upset by this, he got into a confrontation, during which a firearm fell from his waistband. Staff quickly kicked the gun away, secured it, and detained Jordan until police arrived, demonstrating impressive vigilance and quick action.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative that unites various law enforcement agencies to address violent crime and gun violence. This strategy involves collaboration with community organizations and focuses on specific enforcement priorities to create safer neighborhoods. The approach aims to prevent violence while building trust within the communities it serves.
The handling of the case could be seen as a testament to the effectiveness of the said strategy. The Department of Justice announced the collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department in this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Inga Petrovich from the Violent Crime Unit handled the prosecution. For more information, contact Public Information Officer Shane M.
