According to Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, the specific section of Kaukonahua Road between Thompson Corner and Weed Circle has been the site of 28 motor vehicle crashes over a five-year span, incidents that have resulted in two fatalities and three serious injuries; these harrowing statistics spurred the department into action, lane closures are expected during installation times, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and while temporary measures will be in place by September 27, permanent striping will follow shortly thereafter.
A traffic survey by Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation illuminated an urgent issue—between 28% and 69% of drivers were clocked exceeding the 35 mph speed limit within the targeted areas. The newly-installed speed humps will not only slow drivers down but are complemented by signage and are set to support the numerous bus stops and designated crosswalks in the vicinity, ensuring the safety of both pedestrians and vehicle occupants.
